Also known as the Carob Bean, St John's Bread, and many other names this fruit of the evergreen Carob (Ceratonia siliqua) tree can be seen dangling in many countries around the Mediterranean , North Africa and Caribbean.
Mainly used nowadays to produce Locust Bean Gum for food use, Carob Powder (a chocolate alternative), in animal feed (because of its high sugar content), and even in cosmetics.
Pleasant to nibble - and good for the digestion.
Although a major cash crop the un-crushed bean pods are very hard to obtain.....
